A friend brought a Sony VAIO notebook for me to look at because it has display problems. How do I resolve this?

At boot up, the screen slowly (very slowly) starts to light up from the top and spreads round without showing anything. After a while the screen shows very wavy pictures like the sign in dialogue box. Model is: PCG-SRX3F/BD.

sounds like the lcd or the video card is trashed, if you encounter problems before the computer even boots into windows then it is definitely a hardware problem, and most likely can not be resolved without sending it to the manufacturer.

The LCD or the connection to the LCD could be bad. Take it apart and check the connection first. If that checks out, it may be time to replace the LCD. Ebay usually has great deals on replacements:

At best you could uninstall and reinstall the video driver but I’m affeared the monitor itself is takin a dump.
