Was picking Palin as VP putting country first or just a gamble?

A roll of the dice that turned up snake eyes.

A gamble that backfired.

A gamble, but it was a calculated one. They needed someone who would appeal to conservative Christians. That’s a strong voting block and the Republicans have won many elections by getting them to support their candidate.

It was a reckless gamble to win the Hilary supporters over and it didn’t work. That was not putting our country first. Putting our country first would have been picking someone ready to take over from day one, if needed, and that isn’t Palin.

Definitely a gamble.. Mccain thought that since Obama didnt pick Hilary as his running mate that he would appeal to us by picking Palin, a woman. WRONG!!!! He couldve at least picked a smart woman, but i still wouldnt vote for him.

Neither, it was a well planned move. He had to find some way to get the republican base out to the polls. They were not going to turn out for him.
Now that he has a religious nutbag on the ticket who is new enough to the game to put her entire political career in jeopardy by saying the most ridiculous things, boldly lie about the other ticket, and fire up the nutwings with hate filled rhetoric the radical base and every right-wing church in the nation is firmly behind the ticket and doing everything possible to get the vote out and get folks mobilized..
The religious nutbags will turn out in droves to vote for Palin. They could give a F about McCain, they don’t care one of their own is now a heartbeat away from the Presidency, and they really think that after 25 plus years of the Republican party dangling the carrot of reversing Roe VS Wade every election cycle in their faces over and over again, that it will really happen (guess what Wile E. Coyote, the Roadrunner has other plans cause they know it’s good for another 1 or 2 elections. maybe more.)
My neighbor (a mega-church zombie) wasn’t planning to vote this election until Palin was tapped for VP. Now the whole family is involved, they have several yard signs, bumper stickers on every vehicle, and big huge smiles on their faces. I’m gonna bet they’ve volunteered to work on the campaign along with all their church freinds. They will vote against their own self interests (they are lower middle class and will end up getting punished by McCains tax plan, health plan, and education plan) but that doesn’t matter they will gladly vote for a fellow Christian who speaks their language. They have a well connected multi-state network to get the message and distribute materials through just as long as the church itself doesn’t get officially involved.
This is mirrored all over the area where I live, yard signs and bumper stickers have appeared out of nowhere, ever since Palin was selected. It’s all I hear at work Palin this Palin that. Not a single word about a single issue, or any talk of McCain.
She has the base salivating about the ticket now, and without her McCain would have already lost this election by a landslide. Palin was McCains only hope, and it has paid off well. The only question is will it be enoug, and can McCain keep himself quiet enough not to blow it for Palin.
Don’t expect McCain to hand around for too long if they get elected, this ticket is all about Palin.
