Hi-Def Flash based AVCHD camcorder comparison. The Canon Vixia HF100 and Sony HDR-CX12 (HDR-CX11e in Europe) are both in a league of thier own vs the competition but which is better? The HF100 is cousin to the HF10 and HF11. The CX12 is cousin to the HDR-SR11 and HDR-SR12. Includes color testing and motion testing. Taken in San Francisco.

I agree Magoo. How …
I agree Magoo. How can two camcorders be compared like for like after the video has been converted on a computer and then uploaded to YouTube to be compressed further. The only way to compare them would be to have them both in your hand and look at the raw uncompressed files.

I have since found …
I have since found out that my graphics card was the problem. I have a Pentium 4 Dual 3.2 GHZ with 4 meg of ram . I didn’t think I needed a decent card at the time. My problem at this point is those people looking at my videos on YouTube don’t have enough computer to watch. So I’m back to using SD videos.

Your computer might …
Your computer might not be fast enough. Many people end up converting it to mpeg4 or mpeg2 even. With enough bit rate you can’t tell the difference (almost).

The colours are …
The colours are warmer and much more realistic I think at the beach. However I think the green grass may be too saturated. The Canon colours look more true to life to me on the bridge too.

The Canon can …
The Canon can record AVCHD to SD or internal memory at a rate of 24mbps (the same bitrate as HDV)

Def HF100 for me! …
Def HF100 for me! Colors are better and motion test was less choppy with it. I got a Sony 3.5″ DVD camcorder right now and it makes way to much noise while recording. The only time you hear noise though, is during playback. Less moving parts is good.

I thing none of us can judge about the two camcorders from just looking at this video, because we may not forget that this is youtube quality!

I think canon Vixia …
I think canon Vixia HF100 is better than sony’s HDR-Cx12. The colors are so different from each other. Canon has got all the vivid color while the other does not. Horray to canon Vixia HF100.

The difference in …
The difference in quality is very small and it’s just a matter of taste I think. I like the Sony because it can also record in SD if needed and SD quality is much better than any previous SD models. In exchange, I don’t like the glossy black finish, I hope this trend won’t last too long!

I don’t think so, …
I don’t think so, because the tape motor makes a buzzing wizzing noise. So sound is better on the HF100. It’s also smaller, and no moving parts except for lens. HF100 seems like the winner to me.
