I'm my current home theater setup, I've got my Sony DVD Changer (Model DVPNC85H) with an HDMI output to my Bravia TV, and a Digital Coaxial Output to my A/V Receiver. I prefer to have my audio routed thought the Receiver at all times, but the HDMI carries an audio signal to the TV as well.
I'm looking to find a way to mute the HDMI audio stream from the DVD Player to the TV. The only HDMI audio options on the DVD setup are "AUTO" and "PCM", unless I'm missing something. If I mute the TV, I have a "Muting" dialog box in the corner of the screen at all time, which Sony has confirmed that I can't remove.
In the short term, I'm able to manually drop the volume on the TV, but I'd prefer to have all of this programmed through my Harmony remote without having to fuss with the volume levels manually.
Any thoughts on muting the HDMI audio stream?
New detail to add re: the first response… My AV Receiver is a few years old, and has no HDMI input.
Check if you can turn DIGITAL OUT off all together. If not – you can illiminate digital audio signal from HDMI pathby using HDMI/DVI convertor and then DVI/HDMI one. This will illiminate the digital audio signal out of the HDMI path.

Route the HDMI through the receiver you can have multiple inputs for Audio just make sure you configure for the correct one.
Since your receiver is older you may consider changing to component cables. Image will not suffer, display will be better.
Use good interconnects.
Or get new receiver.
