Can your read Kindle books on a Sony Reader?

I would like to know if you can purchase and read Kindle ebooks on a Sony Reader?

No.

First, they use different DRM, largely to prevent that.

Second, you cannot "remove" Kindle books from the closed system the Kindle is. They just don't exist outside of the Kindle itself, and the network/servers delivering/providing the content.

No you cannot. Kindle books use different format. You can read a good comparison about the two device here, and the format supported by them:

If you are in the United States, I'll suggest you to go for the Kindle 2. The free wireless access and strong content provided by Amazon make it stands out of the sony readers.
