I have a Sony DCR-SR22 camcorder that was in a soft case that, thanks to the recent flooding in Mass., was submerged in about 1" of water. It was soaked for a few hours.
I took out the battery, and left it to dry.
Anyone know if it will survive if I let it dry out for a week or so?
Thanks.
It is good that you took the battery out!! Leave it out, let it dry, set it next to a fan.
Take the camcorder, open up any of the doors and stuff, and dunk it in the sink. The sink has much cleaner water than flood water… Less junk in the water means less conductivity. The dirty water will leave bits of sand, dirt, and metals underneath the components in the camera = and that is NO GOOD. Wash with regular water, don’t use soap.
If you want to be thorough, get yourself some pure water, aka distilled water. It has no contaminants and that means that it doesn’t conduct electricity at all. You can rinse it in that stuff, but it isn’t necessary.
Then, once you’ve cleaned it out, let it sit… Preferably with a fan blowing onto it, and set it on a towel. Let it sit for a loooong time. At least 2 or 3 days.
Then recharge the battery, pop it in the camera, and hope that it works.
I had a laptop that I was using outside with my telescope, and the sprinklers came on… Took a week, but it eventually dried out and came back to life. It takes a long time for the tiny droplets of water underneath the chips and stuff to dry out.
