I have read in places that only the 60gb pal ps3 plays old ps2 games, but they do not seem to sell these anymore. Only the 40gb version.
Does the 40gb pal version play ps2 games, or was it just the older 60gb model?
Also, the 40gb plays dvd’s, doesnt it?
Many Thanks.
Yeah, you are correct – only the 60GB version has backward capability with PS2 games, and they aren’t in production anymore (although I expect you could get one for a hefty price on eBay).
At the moment, the only PAL version is the 40GB unit which cannot play any PS2 games, but can play the majority of PS1 games (a small percentage will not work).
As for the NTSC format… not only do they have the 40GB model, but those lucky Japanese and Americans also get an 80GB PS3 that can play PS2 games via software emulation. As of yet, Sony have no plans to release that model in the UK, so your only option would be to buy an American machine (and subsequently, American games). All versions play Blu-ray and DVDs.
It seems that once again, we Brits, and our slower (but better quality) PAL system lose out…

In order to cut the costs, Sony dropped a few things off the 40GB version.
I understand that it does not play PS1 games – but I think it still does PS2.
It doesn’t have the Memory Sockets and I think they might have dropped the Wifi.
It DEFINITELY still plays DVDs and Blu-Ray discs

I am sure of this, and sorry but the other 2 answers are wrong. The 60gb is the only pal one to play ps2 games. The 40gb doesnt, but it does play ps1 games. They are also the only ps3′s on sale in europe. Of course they all play dvd’s and the new hd format blu-ray.
