How do I transfer whats on a videotape to my new Sony camcorder NOT just by recording the TV screen?

Hi – I had an older camcorder – it was an analog sony handycam of the late nineties – and there was a way to put it in VTR mode (i think thats what it was called…when you put it in the mode to watch the vids) there was a way to hook it up to the tv press a couple camcorder buttons simultaneously so that the picture on the television was transferred to the camcorder and you could record it directly by using the cable and pressing a few buttons. I cannot figure out how to do this with my new camcorder – it's a sony digital DCRHC36 (it takes those little mini-tapes) and i've resorted to filming the screen but that just is not working (fuzzy pic, stripes, outside noise, etc) does anyone know how to do with the new camcorder what i was able to do with the old one? THANKS!

1. connect the cables from the vcr/tv to the camcorder.
2. slide power switch until you get play/edit
3. touch p-menu –> rec ctrl –> rec pause (puts the camcorder on standby for recording)
4. start the video you want to record.. at this point you should see the picture on the lcd of the camcorder
5. touch rec start to start recording
6. to stop recording touch the icon with a square on it and then just exit p-menu

i have exactly the same sony model as what you have but i never tried capturing video from a source to record to tape.

BUT! i know for sure that it can do that, by using an i-link cable. if youve used a firewire cable before, the i-link is inserted on the same hole it uses in the camcorder, labeled "DV", the catch is… you will have to have the same hole (DV-OUT) to insert the other end to the source TV or VCR.

if you can manage to watch your video or tv on a computer it will be easier to copy/transfer back to the camcorder. either via memory stick or firewire which most computers supports now.

i really like my HC36 its a cheap video camcorder, but can capture great, crisp digital video. a lot of videocam nowadays has a lot of tricks with its transmission of materials, this is one of them, good luck!
