how does the sony ps2 repair service work?

hi. i own a ps2, but it can't read discs. i'm not going to open it up, so i want to send it to sony. how does their service work? i know that it costs $45 to do it, but how long will it take? thanks!!!

just use it as an excuse to buy a ps3 :)
