How to connect Sony VAIO FS550 Laptop to TV using VGA?

I want to display my laptop on tv. I have connected my vga cord from my laptop (sony vaio fs550, with intel video controler) to my tv (Advent) and it doesn’t display. I tried connecting before I turn laptop and tv on. Can you please help.
