I have a sony tv, a sony dvd recorder and a time warner cable box. Why cant i get the dvd recorder to work?

I have the audio/video cable running from the output on the cable box to the input on the dvd recorder and the audio/video cable running from the output on the dvd recorder to the input on the tv. When i try to record the dvd recorder just shows a black screen. What am i doing wrong?

Not a 100% on this, but maybe change the input source on the dvd recorder. I know on a vcr when you record you have to change the channel to L1 or L2 if recording from AV cables
