I just bought a Macbook Pro. I would like to open video files from my Sony DV cam.?

I am able to import into iMovie directly from my camera. I am however unable to open the files without iMovie. What settings on the camera/computer do I need to adjust in order to transfer the files so I can work with them freely?

iMovie is a video editor… iMovieHD has effects, transitions, allows you to add audio or control the audio you just imported, add text, among other things. What do you want to edit with to "work with them freely"?

With iMovieHD open and the video in the timeline, under File, select "Export" and pick what you want to save to. There are easy pre-set selections – or you can customize (not recommended unless you know what you want). But then these files are "Play Only"…
