i dont have a mac to work with but i do have a windows movie make that looks just as good to use. im capturing my footage with a mini sony hanycam. the problem is i dont have any firewire ports on my pc, only usb. im not sure how to connect the comp to the camera without a firewire port. do i need an adaptor? is that possible? help! im not looking to make feature films, just simple movies and docs.

If you are a keen movie marker and make a lot of movies regularly , you can go out and buy a fire wire port for your desktop . It is quite resonable and a good investment as it has good transfer rates . Problem with the usb is some camera models allow only still picture transfer into the computer .Few however allow video transfer.

Firewire is the Apple trademark name for IEEE 1394. Adapter cards are pretty cheap and are supported by Windows XP right out of the box.

Many adapters are out there. Just remember that you won’t get as good of quality without a firewire port. If you are serious about doing some editing and you have empty ports in your computer, consider going to a local computer shop and having them install a firewire port in your computer. As long as you are running XP, firewire should be fully supported.

Here’s the brutal reality that most who buy a DV camcorder find out after their purchase –

YOU NEED TO BUY A NEW PC

If your PC does not already have Firewire, chances are very good that it will make a very poor platform for editing DV. IT won’t have enough:

    memory
    CPU
    disk space

This is the unspoken truth the electronic stores never utter for fear of loosing a sale.
