Is it advisable to format a Sony Vaio notebook so as to give it a new setup?

I want to give the above mentioned notebook a new setup but have misplaced the notebooks own setup CDs. Is it advisable to format it then run setup with the windows xp setup cds? If ya, how do I go through the process?

As long as the VAIO supports XP; Contact Sony tech support for ordering XP Recovery CDs if available for that model laptop.
