I purchased this DVD player shortly after it came out at Tweeter. The HDMI picture is wonderful on a HD TV.
That's the good news. The bad is it didn't take long for it to behave erractically – usually shutting itself off. Many different failure modes – locking the disc was the last. The dealer replaced it with a brand new which failed within 20 days. This one wouldn't play a DVD or power off were among the chief failures.
I upgraded to a different brand. Fortunately, I was dealing with an outfit that willing to do this. No more Sony equipment for me.
Pro : HDMI output
Con : Relability

Ninety percent of the electronics in my home are Sony products: 60" LCD TV, 27" TV (17yrs & going strong), 20" TV (10yrs), 13" TV, CD Player, VCR, Receiver, etc. Wonderful experience with all – until this unit. From day one this player operated poorly. The SACD never worked, the tray locked, the unit shuts off in mid movie, the picture quality is little improvement over earlier models (before progressive scan, HDMI), and finally, the unit stopped reading all CD's / DVD's. I will still purchase the Sony brand for most electronics; however, I recommend DVD shoppers reconsider thoughts regarding the purchase of the Sony DVP-NS975V.
