Sony. Have Been Refused Refund On A Brand New Sony DVD Recorder Which Is Faulty. What Do I Do?

Jun 10
2009

Retailer has refused me a refund on a brand new Sony DVD Recorder, only offering a repair.
I would be without it for week's.
Besides, I would not want to have a new machine under repair.
Offered to take a replacement, but that was refused, too.
It is known that there are problems with Sony machines but I did not realise that faults are so bad.
There is a total of 3 faults with this machine.
Can you recommend what action to take?

if you FIRST returned it within 28 days they HAVE to offer you a refund if not they have the right to offer only a repair or credit towards upgraded product.

John Lewis have this extended to 90 days or 6 months depending on products.

if you bought it with a credit card or loan get the them involved too as then the credit card is jointly liable!

it unusual for Sony products to develop that many faults as they are generally very reliable

Repairs are often done within 5 days in my experience! you can put a limit of 7 days on the repair and if they have not repaired it in that time they would have to offer credit or replacement machine!

That is not write if you have a warranty, If it was a lot of money the cam or lot of money to pay to repair go on the home insurance

You are entitled to a replacement or a refund if the product is in it's warranty period and you have not misused it in anyway!

    Don't take any sh1t!

Tell them if you don't receive a replacement (Not this model – thank you!) or a refund you will contact their HQ AND Trading Standards!

Stand your ground and don't be bullied!

    Yes – 2 choices initially
    1. go to citizens advice bureau who can help you with this problem
    2. go to trading standards who have legal authority to deal with problem and prosecute retailer if necessary
    both are free of charge

Your statutory rights say the retailer has to offer you a full refund, take the matter up with trading standards.

Yes, tell them under the Sale of Goods Act 1979 you are entitled to a full refund for faulty goods.
If they still refuse, bring in trading standards

if still under warranty contact Sony customer services and ask for refund, other than that the only other thing you could do would be to go to your local Trading Standards office and they will take action (hopefully).good luck. :)

I think under the 'sale of goods' act your purchase must do 'what is says on the label'.
I would take the matter up with management firstly, putting your complaint in writing or email. (Keep copies]
You purchased the item as new and a repaired item is not 'as new'. You could also contact Sony who may be more understanding that the retailer.
Always keep copies of email or letters and avoid phone calls that have little legal status. I am sure you will get your money back or a new machine. It is a try on. If not, armed with your copy email go to the small claims court and claim money back plus compensation for costs and all the aggro!
