i’m thinking of getting a ps3, however i have a ps2 as well, what version of ps3 do i need to be able to play ps2 games on ps3. for example do i need a 20gb 40gb 80gb (ps3)
20GB and NTSC 60GB are the best, they play ~100% of PS2 games. Old 80GB and European 60GB play ~70% of PS2 games. 40GB, new 80GB and upcoming 160GB can’t play PS2 games at all. All PS3 versions play PS1 games.

I know for a fact that the 60gb can play PS2 games because I have one. However, they stopped making that model. I hear now you have to buy the Metal Gear Solid 4 Special 80gb Edition in order for the system to have the reverse compatible drive. Good luck finding either one of those.

The 20GB ps3 plays all ps2 games.
The 40GB does not play ps2 games.
The 60GB plays all ps2 games.
The 80GB does play ps2 games but theres lots of reports saying some games doesn’t work properly.
(keep in mind that it is region sensitive playing ps2 games in ps3).

Best bet is to go to Game Stop or EB or a place that sells USED systems and ask for a used OLD 80GB. Make sure they know you want the old one and not the new “core” system. It would be very difficult to find a 20GB or 60B unless you are willing to pay big bucks. They stopped making them awhile back. The old 80GB will still be difficult to find, but won’t be too high of a price(about $450, and the MGS4 bundle is $500 if you could find it).
