i’m planning to buy a sony e-reader. I read alot of e-books on my laptop and my eyes get tired soon, so i’m considering to buy the reader. is there any other product like this that has more or maybe the same features. How’s the irex iliad ?

My boss actually has one that I played with a bit.

I found the software interface to be somewhat clunky.

Plus, you either need to obtain the book in Sony’s e-reader format or PDF. Right now, there just isn’t a lot of book availability in these formats.

Before you spend the money, maybe research other things you could do with your laptop, e.g. adjust the contrast, use a different program, adjust font sizes, etc. Fundamentally, the Sony Reader screen is built with the same technology as your laptop screen.

Microsoft Reader (available as free software for all but the oldest Pocket PC / Windows Mobile machines) is great – and features ‘Cleartype’ – as remarkable font rendering technology that makes screen reading much easier. I have a VGA Pocket PC (the HP HX4700) – and the image is FANTASTIC and VERY easy on the eyes – but there are much cheaper alternatives out there (the Acer N311 springs to mind). However – any resolution screen will suffice – Cleartype makes lower resolution screens easy on the eyes – and the great thing is the machines are SO portable – and occasionally double up as a PDA… ;) You can also create your own ebooks using several tools – one of which is a free plug-in for Microsoft Word. The ebooks are READILY available on the web – listed as .LIT files.

    Highly recommended.
