How do I install Windows XP on my Sony Vaio PCG-x505/SP netbook? It is the BIOS supports booting from USB?
First off, can not find me, an optical drive for this specific netbook, I was wondering whether a new copy of XP was installed with my USB flash drive be? (If the BIOS supports?)
When you start to keep tapping either F1, F2, F10, (Note that some manufacturers use F10 to restore the system!) Esc or Del to the BIOS Setup. Search for "Drive Configuration", "Boot Order" or similar and make the USB drive first boot device. Save settings and exit. Note that some BIOS versions require that a USB device is inserted before it can be detected. Install XP from a USB drive. What you need: USB_PREP8 http://www.2shared.com/file/2581432/a65c092a/usb_prep8.html PeToUSB http://www.2shared.com/file/2581436/a131cd33/PeToUSB_3007.html Bootsect.exe http://www.2shared. com/file/2585881/5ad9ef68/bootsect.html Special Note: If you use the program Nlite you should keep the manual installation of files that the script USB_prep8 based on these files. Unzip the files Bootsect.zip in the next step is to extract and USB_prep8 PeToUSB. Next, copy the executable into the PeToUSB USB_prep8 folder. Inside the folder double USB_prep8 They called usb_prep8.cmd on the executable. Press any key to continue These settings are preconfigured for you all you need to do now is click on Start. Once the format is complete DO NOT close the window just leave everything as it is and open a command prompt from the Start menu (type cmd into the search bar one or run box depending on your version of Windows.). Inside the command window to have the directory stored bootsect.exe go. (Use the cd directory name Folder command switch) Now type "bootsect.exe / nt52 R:" NOTE R: is the drive letter for my USB stick if you different, you must accordingly change is. What does this part is to write the correct boot sector to your USB stick, this allows your PC to boot from USB stick without it nothing works. Please note: If you can not open a bootsect.exe command window and displays the contents of your USB stick, if you open a window bootsect.exe will be able to drive the lock and write the bootsector correctly. If all went well you should see "boot code was successfully updated on all targeted volumes." Now you can close this command prompt (not near the usbprep8 one by mistake) and the PeToUSB window. Now you must enter the correct information for numbers 1-3. Press 1 and then enter. A folder opens search window for the location of you XP setup files (also known as CD-ROM drive with xp cd in) Press Browse to the 2, and enter a letter not currently on a drive on your PC Press 3 and enter the assigned drive letter of your USB stick Press 4 to start the operation . start The script asks you if it ok format drive T:. This is only a temporary drive the program creates the cache, the Windows installation files. Press Y, and enter Then. Once it's done formatting, press the Enter key to continue again, you can now see the program copying files to the temp drive it created. Once this occurs, press Enter to continue again. Next you will see a box and asks you to see to copy the files to USB drive yes / no Yes. If the script is finished copying files, a pop-up window asking whether you want USB drive will be preferred boot drive U: Select Yes in that window. Now select yes to mount the virtual drive. Ok, we are the hard part done, close the window usbprep8. Now make sure your PC is USB as the primary Boot-configured device. Insert your USB drive and reboot the PC. On the Start menu, you have two options, choose option number 2 for text mode setup. From this Point is to delete it like any other Windows XP installation / re-format the primary partition on your PC with NTFS. Make sure you delete, delete all partitions and create a single partition or you will get the hal.dll error message. Once the text mode part of the installation is complete, boot into the GUI mode (you can press after the restart, if your too excited to wait about 30 seconds) If the GUI portion of setup is complete you will be returning to the GUI mode to boot the XP installation that is is completed and you will end up at you XP desktop. It is very important that you NOT remove the USB-STICK before this point. As soon as you can see your start menu, it is to safely remove the usb stick and reboot your PC to make sure everything works. This method has advantages over all current no cdrom methods of installing XP on a PC. You still have to copy setup files to install in DOS to the SSD, and from there. It gives you access to the Recovery Console is accessed by the system in text mode setup and it gives you the ability to run repair installations of XP if you have problems later.
