For use of RFID in the internal processes and 1:1 relationships with suppliers, the number of users / participants develop small enough for the automotive industry its own data structures, to manage the number range for their applications.

In contrast to closed-loop systems, RFID applications in the open-loop systems such as the automotive aftermarket require an open, global standard to ensure interoperability at a global level. A ground-breaking approach was developed by the Automotive Industry Action Group (AIAG) made (USA) in collaboration with EPCglobal and ISO with a strong participation from Michelin. Known as B11, This standard allows the tire management information and allow two separate numbering formats, either EPC or ISO-based, with a single RFID tag and a data structure. This solution could be used for other automotive applications as well as works such as the spare parts market (presence of authorized dealer network and retail) where the Coexistence of different formats numbering is important, but can afford only a technical implementation.

Today RFID applications in the automotive industry are still rare, especially on closed-loop systems. In order to unlock the benefits of RFID in open circuit, such as the establishment of efficient after-market services, interoperability between the various players in the business has to be activated by a standard. The agreement on a generally accepted standard RFID in the automotive industry was suddenly would trigger a domino effect and as such the tipping-point definition of a large-scale introduction of RFID in the automotive industry.
