I had an appearance on Twin Cities Live today talking about eReaders. We went over 3 different eReaders that I own, but my collection is actually larger than that. I thought it was fun, and hopefully I was able to present the technology in a way that even a techophobe would understand.

But plastic cups …
But plastic cups and e-readers don’t biodegrade. They can’t be made into compost. Most people don’t bother properly recycling their plastic cups or electronic devices.
Furthermore, the maintenance of a book is lower than an e-reader. Also, books can be kept for longer, while the pace of technology and a consumer mentality drives us to create and discard electronic devices at a very environmentally unfriendly pace.
That said, I’m 100% for e-readers, but not for environmental reasons.

Don’t forget too …
Again, let’s not over blow the advantages. The digital readers have their advantages but often the justifications used for the digital readers are hyped up. Besides, most people don’t buy two hardcover books a month.
Don’t forget too that you can often get these bestsellers at your local public library

Umm…have we …
Umm…have we forgotten that reading books (or anything) at the same distance for a long time will strain the eyes? It’s not as if ePaper has solved that problem. ePaper does have its uses but the advantage that is doesn’t strain one’s eyes is over blow, over hyped. One reason our eyes strain when reading is the amount of time our eyes are fixated on the same distance. Regardless of paper or ePaper, this will happen.

Plastic cups …
Plastic cups consume more resources to make than paper cups. However the former is considered more environmentally friendly because it only takes a small amount of energy to clean and reuse.
It’s the same idea here. The ebook consumes more resources initially, however the maintenance is low. Especially since the eInk uses very little power compared to other display technologies.
