   The playstation 2 is backwards compatible with the playstation 1 so you have a larger library of games. Also it depends on what kind of games you like. If you like RPG's then go with the Playstation as it has the final fantasy series and such. If you like First Person Shooters and such then go with the xbox

   Playstation 2 hands down.

   Much better selection of games, (there are even a few still coming out).
   It's smaller, more reliable, and you can play DVD's without buying extra peripherals. The only thing that you will be lacking by buying a PS2 is Halo, and trust me, an Xbox isn't worth buying for one series. I promise you will be happier with the PS2, good luck!
