I'm looking at buying a sony reader 505 to lessen the amount of books I need to carry. I went on google books and found that some of my high school textbooks were available on it. I was wondering will I be able to get any book on google books unto my sony reader without having to buy it.
I'm a college student too. I owned the Kindle 2 and I've got some textbooks on my Kindle. Indeed, I'll recommend you to get the Kindle instead of Sony Reader. If you can get the Google book in PDF format, they will be readable on both the Kindle and Sony Reader. However, the Kindle has better feature and more content available (as it is supported by Amazon) compared to the Sony Reader. There is an article compare the Kindle 2 and the latest version of Sony Reader:

Not only the Kindle has more content available, but also Amazon has signed contract with three major textbook publishers so eventually 60% of textbook will be available on the Kindle, and they will be cheaper than the actual textbooks. There is a discussion about textbook on the Kindle here:

I'll recommend you to read this review on the Kindle 2 too, it outlines quite a lot of benefits of the ebook reader:

Hope this helps.

Its really easy to buy, download and add books to Sony reader 505.You can I download either for free from the Sony Classics offer or from websites. The software will only run on Windows XP and Vista. If you have Windows 2000 or earlier, you're out of luck. This is important.

I think you can download the google book in HTML or PDF format, and they can be read on both the Sony Reader or the Kindle.
If you are in the United States, however, I'll suggest you to go for the Kindle instead of Sony Reader. Read the review here to know more:

I owned the Kindle 2 and I like it very much. It is better than Sony Reader because Amazon provide good content support, and the number of books available in Kindle format is kept on increasing (right now there are over 300,000 Kindle books). Sony Reader, however, many users complaint that it is difficult to find suitable books. Other benefits of the Kindle over Sony Reader include the free wireless internet access, and the text-to-speech function. It worth to pay a bit more for the Kindle 2 and you won't regret.
If you often read PDF, you may want to go for the Kindle DX. Read this review and you should be able to decide which one to get:

Hope this helps.

Yes, I think you can put google books to the sony reader. Look into this review to know more:

If you haven't bought it yet, you may consider the Kindle 2. It can read not only google books, but Amazon also provides quite a lot of free books for the Kindle:
