Sony Reader and the Kindle are the two most popular e-readers. But I’ll suggest the Kindle 2, unless you are outside the United States (because Amazon doesn’t allow order of the Kindle outside the U.S.). The biggest issue is the content availability. The Kindle is supported by Amazon with much more book selections. Kindle books are also cheaper than the actual books, so it will save you money in long term. Amazon also provide thousands of Kindle books for free or at a low price. Sony reader is much weaker in this area.
There is a good comparison here about the two digital book readers:

I’m a Kindle 2 owner and I love my Kindle 2 very much. I think the text-to-speech function is very helpful, and right now this function is only provided by the Kindle 2. It means I can use it to "read" books just like listening to music with the ipod.
The free internet access of the Kindle is also very useful if you are in the United States. Not only that I can buy and download the ebooks everywhere with wireless access, but also I can access websites like wikipedia or google any time when I’m on the road.
Another major advantage of the Kindle is that it is more easy to find books in Kindle format. Read the following review and you’ll know. It is a review from an actual customer called N. Jenkins, who is a fan of sony reader, but also favor the Kindle for more available titles:

In the USA the kindle has the advantage of Amazon whispernet that allows you to purchase eBook through wireless. If that feature is not important for you or you live outside the USA there are several Kindle alternatives : http://www.tech-no-media.com/2009/05/ebook-readers-5-kindle-alternatives.html
