Why the DVD option on Sony PS2 is not popular?

Sony PS2 comes with a DVD player but most people I know do not use the DVD feature. They have a separate DVD player to watch DVDs. I am curious to find out if this is true outside my sample space. If so why?

Well if you have the older PS2(not the slim) it is known to mess up the laser when u play u r DVD's on it. Dont know why but it does. Anyhow, i think its the lack of the remote control that makes it unpopular. I mean come on who wants a corded controller that u cant take with u on the couch or on u r bed. Oh yeah one more thing u cant turn it off by using the controller, u have to get up and shut it off (that's old school)

I also find this strange my mates all own cheap supermarket DVD players where as the one in their PS2 is better but still they watch DVDs on a separate player!

Lets see when PS3 comes if they will pay £500 for a separate blue player!

The DVD player on the PS2 is not a great player. 6 years ago when the PS2 was first released, it was used more often because the PS2 was $300 when stand-alone DVD players cost $500 or more. Now you can buy good progressive-scan DVD players for $50 or less, so why bother using the PS2 DVD player?

For me it's just to save wear and tear. The PS2 is $129, you can get a DVD player for under $50.
Also, PS2 can tend to be a little picky about dirty discs.
As for the ruins the laser rumor, that is untrue. But think about the hours. Most of the time I play games an hour or two at the most 3-4 times a week. On the other hand I watch half a dozen movies a week or more.
