like would it be possible for them to have an update that allows backwards compatibility so you can play playstation 2 games?
Are we all listening? Okay–
IT. IS. IMPOSSIBLE.
It has nothing to do with the software. There is NOTHING you can do to change it except buy a new PS3 with the compatibility, if they ever make it again. Let me say it again:
IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH SOFTWARE UPDATES, SOFTWARE, FIRMWARE, NONE OF THAT.
It has to do with, real physical parts missing from the machine.
There are no mods you can get online, no emulators to do it off of torrent, nothing.

You already can on some PS3′s.
There is a chip that allows full backwards compatibility, but they stopped putting it in to save money. They also tried software emulation that allows about 80% compatibility, however, I don’t know why they removed this feature from the newer PS3′s

only the previous models, unless you have any way to mod it to enable the choice

No.
The PS3 still needs certain hardware to make use of any software download (i.e., what the first 80 GB used). New PS3s do not have any of the hardware, so no download or update will help at all.
The only thing to hope for is the developers to make a PSN version of their game available for purchase and download in the PSN store, like with the PS1 games. Its not likely to happen until at least the PS2 platform is dropped, whis is said to happen at the end of Sony’s fiscal year, next March.
Why would you want to play PS2 games on a PS3 anyway? PS2 games give me diarrhea.

Never. PS2 compatibility is hardware based. The 20 and 60GB (NTSC) have the PS2 CPU and GPU, both physically. The original 80GB and 60GB (PAL) had the GPU physically, but the CPU was emulated, reducing PS2 compatibility. All the other models lack any PS2 hardware. In other words, an update cannot make this work.
